What Types of Treatment Programs Are Available?

Topsail Addiction Treatment offers three levels of addiction treatment for people struggling with substance use disorders. These treatment programs include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (also called PHP or full-day treatment)
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (also called IOP or half-day treatment)
  • Outpatient Treatment (weekly treatment).

Addiction services are provided by licensed professionals at our outpatient facility to residents of Andover, Massachusetts. Our rehab center serves communities of Greater Boston, including residents of North Reading, as well as Eastern Massachusetts, Southern New Hampshire, and all of New England.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

A partial hospitalization program, sometimes called a full-day treatment program, is the highest level of addiction treatment provided in an outpatient setting. It is comparable to a residential addiction treatment program in terms of intensity because it provides significant support and supervision during treatment. The primary difference is that a patient participating in a PHP does not live onsite at the facility during their treatment. Instead, patients return home following full-day treatment sessions.

The PHP program at Topsail Addiction Treatment is designed to help patients with serious substance use disorders who require structured, daily care. It typically consists of 5 or 6-hour sessions that occur five days a week. Sessions may include individual therapy, group counseling, and educational classes, among other programming. A PHP is well suited for individuals who are either beginning their treatment journey or as a transition for people who have recently completed inpatient addiction treatment (PHP is usually the next step after detox and/or residential treatment is complete). A PHP may also be a good fit for individuals who can’t commit to an inpatient program but require more intensive addiction treatment than standard outpatient programs offer.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

An intensive outpatient program (IOP), sometimes called a half-day treatment program, is an immersive addiction treatment program that enables individuals to receive treatment for substance use disorders while accommodating other obligations, such as work, school, or family. It requires less time for treatment per day or week than a partial hospitalization program. Generally, patients need to attend about 10 hours of treatment each week, consisting of case management, individual and group counseling, and classes or workshops. Patients can receive treatment services during the day, before or after work or school, in the evening, and/or on weekends. Intensive outpatient treatment programs are often recommended for people who do not need medically managed detoxification or daily, supervised treatment for substance use disorders.

Outpatient Program

General outpatient treatment, sometimes called weekly treatment, is considered a step down from an intensive outpatient program. Compared to an intensive outpatient program, general outpatient care requires fewer hours spent in treatment weekly. This schedule allows patients to participate in their regular activities such as work, school, or family while receiving treatment. At Topsail Addiction Treatment, outpatient sessions typically run once a week for about an hour. Treatment is customized to each patient and may consist of individual therapy or group therapy sessions. During therapeutic sessions, patients acquire the skills, strategies, and tools necessary to gain and maintain recovery in the real world. General outpatient care is often recommended for individuals who are at risk of continued alcohol or drug abuse without outpatient treatment, including those who have completed a PHP or IOP.

Which Treatment Program is Right for Me?

Because no single treatment program is right for everyone, addiction treatment programs at Topsail Addiction Treatment are customized to fit the needs of the individual patient. All treatment programs begin with a consultation with a licensed treatment professional. During the consultation, a treatment plan will be designed based on a variety of factors. These factors may include your goals for treatment, whether you have a co-occurring mental health disorder, your past history with addiction and substance use disorders treatment, and many other issues that are unique to your situation. Generally, outpatient treatment programs at Topsail Addiction Treatment include a combination of individual therapy and group counseling, education and workshops, medication to manage withdrawal or to help with cravings, and support networks to help with your recovery.
