Making Sense of Addiction Treatments: Comparing PHP, IOP and OP

Anyone living in MA for the past decade will recognize the dramatic increase in addiction and addiction-related problems facing our communities. According to the 2013-2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 9.7% of Massachusetts residents 12 years of age or older met the criteria for dependence or abuse of alcohol and illicit drugs.
Addiction treatment facilities in Massachusetts are struggling to keep pace as public, private-pay, and national/ corporate addiction treatment programs race to answer the call, as the demand is far outweighing the supply.
David Ray, the Executive Director of Topsail Addiction Treatment in Andover, MA, has been outspoken on the need for quality addiction treatment programs in MA.
Ray was quoted recently in an article for the local Andover news, saying, “There isn’t enough treatment available in Massachusetts. Even more than that, there is definitely not enough quality treatment in Massachusetts.
His experience, both personally and as a professional in the addiction treatment field for more than a decade, is the driving force behind Topsails’ commitment to providing life-changing addiction treatment for the people of Massachusetts.
“The mission of Topsail is to provide world-class addiction treatment in Andover and all of north suburban Boston. We strive to help our clients and their families find meaningful and lasting recovery.”
Addiction Treatment options in Massachusetts can be as diverse as the people they serve. Different types of addiction require different types of treatment, but in general, there are three types of non-residential addiction treatment programs that are designed to assist addicts in recovery: Partial Hospitalization Programs Treatments(PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and Outpatient Programs (OP).
These programs are often considered a continuum of care for people as they work through their addiction treatment. (See a normal recovery timeline here.)
Each phase in this process is designed to provide the appropriate level of treatment and support to help you get back to living a clean and healthy lifestyle. Many people choose outpatient programs because they tend to be less expensive and are more accommodating to people with other responsibilities such as work or family.
Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) are also commonly known as “day programs or “Full-day Programs.” These are the most intensive programs available in a non-residential setting and are often considered a “step-down” from inpatient treatments.
They usually require attendance for 4-5 days a week, with the client returning to their homes to sleep. The comprehensive nature of PHP programs allows the use of a variety of therapies, including behavioral therapy, individual counseling, Group therapy, and other programs, to help identify the best course of action to help treat your addiction.
Partial Hospitalization is often the first step for addicts on their road to recovery. Successful completion of a PHP program will lead most people into an Intensive Outpatient program.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are similar in structure to PHP programs; however, they tend to be more focused and require fewer hours per week in treatment.
IOP programs are designed to help facilitate a return to a sober lifestyle as clients can schedule treatment around work and other obligations.
Outpatient programs (also called Out patient Programs) are often the final treatment step in an individual’s addiction treatment. These programs offer flexibility and provide programs that will work around their schedules. OP programs are usually tailored to meet the individual’s needs, but they can require as little as an hour a week of therapy and support.
