The Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Care

You may wonder what the difference is between outpatient and inpatient substance abuse treatment. Just as it sounds, inpatient addiction treatment involves a residential stay at a treatment facility. Outpatient treatment involves clients coming to the facility several times a week to receive medication and addiction treatment.

At Topsail Addiction Treatment, you’ll find effective treatment and caring staff members committed to your well-being. Let’s look at the difference between inpatient and outpatient care more closely.

What Is Inpatient Addiction Rehab?

Many people seek an inpatient addiction rehab center immediately after detox. Inpatient substance use disorder treatment provides around-the-clock care and oversight. If you choose this level of care, you will live at the facility and participate in recovery programs tailored to your needs. The length of stay varies greatly, depending on your need, length of addiction, and difficulty reintegrating back into drug-free living. However, many people stay between 28 and 90 days.

You’re most vulnerable immediately after detox. You may opt for an inpatient addiction treatment program to help you through the early stages of recovery. It’s certainly a good idea for anyone with an addiction to more than one substance and co-occurring mental, physical and emotional disorders.

As you progress through your program, the focus shifts from getting all the toxic substances out of your body to concentrating on what kind of life you will live when you leave the facility.

What Is Outpatient Addiction Rehab?

Outpatient rehab programs are quite different from inpatient ones. In an outpatient treatment program, clients stay at home when they aren’t attending therapy sessions or classes. This allows you to return to school, work, or other obligations. At the same time, those in outpatient treatment programs have access to individual and group therapy sessions.

Our licensed psychiatrist and medical staff administer care and medication if needed. These programs help alleviate cravings and withdrawal symptoms. You can also receive treatment for mental health disorders accompanying your substance use disorder.

This provides stability for those who still need an anchor to keep them on the right path. You can think of an outpatient program as your North Star, a place you can look to for care, concern, and confidence in your ability to remain clean and sober.

At Topsail Addiction Treatment, we don’t pretend to have all the answers. However, we hire licensed therapists and have a team of medical professionals invested in the ongoing sobriety of each client. Here are the different treatment programs we offer:

  • PHP / Full Day Treatments – This comprehensive program provides compassionate care and programs that last a full day. You will attend various treatment programs five days a week. We welcome you to attend this program at our treatment facility.

  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment – The intensive outpatient treatment program might be the right option for those who need immersive treatment while reintegrating into their lives. IOP Is a step down in terms of the level of care compared to PHP. Participants meet for three or four hours a day, three times a week, and there are day and evening sessions to accommodate your schedule.

  • An Outpatient Treatment -This plan customizes the needs of each individual. And it accommodates those who have reintegrated back into normal living. These sessions run for an hour about once a week.

The important thing is to find a program that meets your individual needs. With the right assistance and help navigating the most sensitive part of your recovery, you can do it.

What Do You Expect in Outpatient Treatment?

Outpatient treatment programs utilize some of the same treatment techniques as inpatient ones. For example, you might engage in cognitive behavioral therapy to become aware of harmful thoughts and behaviors. The strategy is to change your way of thinking with healthier alternatives. In contingency management, the therapist will provide specific incentives to activate the brain’s reward center when you maintain a drug-free and alcohol-free living. The matrix model has therapists working as coaches and teachers. Treatment focuses on empowerment and improving self-image.

There are pros and cons to both inpatient and outpatient programs, as you can imagine. It all depends on where you are in your journey.
